Sci fi is a huge and inspiring genre that is sort of conjoined with fantasy but to the hardcore sci fi fans they are quite different, Sci-fi has evolved during course of time as technology improves so does the possibilities of creating more believable visual effects.
My favorite display of visual effects is from 'Pirates of the Caribbean dead mans chest' Davy Jones, he was entirely made from CGI and used a motion capture process that captured the performances of an actor and translated to a digital model, i think the level of realism on Davy Jones is truley astonishing and still rivals that of 'Avatar'.
older visual effects required the use of make up artists to carry out prosthetics on the actors using latex masks such as those seen in early Star Trek films.
