Binary opposition and Structuralism

This weeks lecture: Binary opposition and Structuralism


Structuralism is how things draw our attention and what we think is more interesting oppose to its dull opposite we do not see for instance we tend not to think of the air around us.

Binary opposition is a balance that separates into two categories, for example:
  
good and evil
light and dark
life and death
win and lose 
male and female



Characters such as Magneto and professor X from X-men are opposites, one seeks to destroy the other for whatever reasons. However they seem to maintain a level of respect for each other in the sense that they wouldn't actually physically harm each other. 


Shadow and light are two sides of the same coin…One cannot exist without the other
