Intertextuality

Intertextuality, Easter eggs and cameo appearances found in Pixar films!

This weeks lecture was on intertextuality, Intertextuality is the idea that nothing is original, and as much as you would like it to be it often makes connections to several other references and quotations from other texts and films. And how one person may perceive something your perception may differ from theirs. Intertextuality branches off into many different aspects including areas I find particularly interesting such as Easter eggs, cameos, reused media, subliminal messages, parodies etc.

Easter eggs and cameo appearances are often intentionally placed within a scene by producers and directors for their own amusement. Pixar is renowned for placing Easter eggs and cameo appearances within most their films that have some sort of hidden reference to either upcoming films or previous film.

The images above are examples of cameo appearances found in pixar's up and Toy story 3. Pixar’s Up features a scene with a young girl in her room overwhelmed by the colours caused by the balloons attached to the floating house as it passes her window, and a pink teddy bear is seen placed by the side of her bed, both the young girl and the pink bear inevitably end up being featured in Pixar’s future film Toy story 3.

Earlier this year Disney-Pixar confirmed the release of monsters inc 2, due 2012. However it seems that there were signs of a possible monster inc 2 all along, as early as Wall-e. The images above show some Easter eggs found in toy story 3, a toy that looks similar to Sully and the young girl playing with toys seems to resemble an older Boo.
